Elsie Hayes Obituary

Elsie M. Hayes, 95, of Tiffin, passed away on Thursday, July 31, 2025 at her home surrounded by loved ones.

Elsie was born on February 1, 1930 in Toledo, to late Thomas H. and Ruth W. (Bear) Dodson. On July 25, 1947 she married Robert L. Hayes. They were married 52 years before he preceded her in death on August 2, 1999.

Survivors include a son, Robert L. (Carolyn) Hayes Jr. of Curtis, David M. Hayes of Tiffin, a daughter, Darlene M. (David) Fatzinger of Tiffin, eight grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren, seventeen great-great-grandchildren, a loving 19 year old cat Ashes, and a dog she called “biggy boy” Shilo.

Elsie was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, Tommy and a great-granddaughter, Kendall Chevalier.

She worked at General Electric several years, during this time she was asked to join the first women’s bowling team for Kleppers, she bowled with a 16 lb. ball. Later she worked for Cartwright Electric. In 1972 with her husband and parents they started Tiffin Ceramics. She was certified in Jacquelyn Stains, Duncan glazes, china paint, porcelain and ceramic dolls, along with many various painting techniques. Later she drove bus for Seneca County School of Opportunity and 181 House.

While driving bus she met Vi Lange and started taking guitar lessons which turned into a friendship of them playing guitars together.

Elsie quilted and made baby blankets for grandchildren. Then crocheted baby blankets for great grandchildren until macular degeneration took her sight.

The family would like to thank Blanchard Valley Hospice staff, volunteers and all those associated with them.

There will be a private family graveside service held at Fairmont cemetery. The Engle-Shook Funeral Home & Crematory in Tiffin is assisting the family with their arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to Blanchard Valley Hospice, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or Cherry Street mission.
