George V. Sommers

George V. Sommers, 78, of Kansas, Ohio went to be with his Lord Saturday, January 9, 2021 at the Volunteers of America Autumnwood Care Center in Tiffin surrounded by loved ones.

George was born in Burgoon, OH on August 23,1942 to Vernon A Sommers and Phyllis (Jacobs) Sommers.

Surviving are three siblings, Roberta (Leo Sr.) Hays of Kansas, Arthur (Janet (DeMuth) Sommers of Williamsburg, VA, Jeanne (John) Weber of Indianapolis, IN, nieces and nephews, Margie, Leo Jr. and Tineke Hays, Tony, John, Shelly and Alex Payne, Kent Sommers and Kendra Weber-Crowe, a very special grand niece and grand nephew, Molly and Jacob Heilman of Kansas and a loving cousin, Carolyn (Randall) Gittinger of Melmore.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Phyllis, loving grandparents, Arthur and Helen (Vogt) Jacobs, a sister, Gail Payne, niece, Becky Carlson and a great-grand nephew, Daniel Preble.

George worked at the Opportunity Center and Roppe Rubber RE-ADs for 47 years retiring at the age of 75, he was very dedicated to his job and never liked missing a day of work. George was a resident of Autumnwood Care Center and after retirement he would fill his days helping the volunteer Bernie by performing maintenance of the grounds. In his younger years George was a great help to his dad running the family farm and took great pride in that, his knowledge about farming and tractors was endless and he loved sharing farming stories with those he met. He also enjoyed watching old westerns and John Wayne movies were his favorite. George never met a stranger and showed kindness to everyone. Those who had the pleasure to know him knew he was a friend for life. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends which he had many and they loved spending time with him. In words of his niece Molly, he was the best Uncle a kid could have and all of his nieces and nephews couldn’t agree more he would always take the time to play games with them. A John Wayne quote that describes George best was “Courage is being scared to death and saddling up any way.” George faced many challenges in life but he always faced them with courage and a smile on his face. 

The family would like to thank the staff at Autumnwood Care Center for the love and compassion that was given to him during his residency there.

There will be no services at this time and a celebration of George's life will be held at a later date. The Engle-Shook Funeral Home & Crematory in Tiffin is assisting the family with their arrangements.

In lieu of flowers the family ask that charitable contributions be made to the Seneca County Opportunity Center in Tiffin.
