John William Bastian, 76, of Tiffin, passed away at 6:40 p.m., Wednesday, March 10, 2021 at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky.
John was born on October 26, 1944 in Tiffin, to the late John Reynolds and Irma Leona (Berlekamp) Bastian. He married Susan Prodell and they later divorced and he then married Becky Ireland Cosairt and they also divorced.
Survivors include his step-daughter, Jessie Ireland of Indiana, sister, Mary (Paul) Porter of Tiffin and a brother, Robert (Carroll) Bastian of Falls Church, VA.
John was a 1962 graduate of Old Fort High School and a 1966 graduate of The Ohio State University with a Dairy Science Degree. While at Ohio State John was a 3 year member of the marching band and played the Flugga Horn. John was also active in their Army R.O.T.C. for all 4 years. John also earned his Masters Degree from Ohio State in Agricultural Economics. John served as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army during his 14 month tour in Korea as a Company Commander of a Combat Engineer Company. After Korea he was a Company Commander of a Combat Engineer Company in Fort Campbell, KY.
Besides dairy farming on the home farm, John worked with Farm Management in Ohio, Kentucky and was the Indiana Farm Management Consultant for PCA in Peru, IN where he was the Supervisor of five credit offices. John also ran the John Bastian Farm Agricultural Financial Management Company.
John was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Rochester, Indiana where he was a member of the church choir. John was involved with the Big Brother Program and fostered a child and also enjoyed being a Boy Scout Leader.
John was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Barbara Jo Blackburn.
There will be a private family graveside service for John at Pleasant Ridge cemetery with Military Honors being conducted by the United Veterans Council. There will be a private family viewing held at Engle-Shook Funeral Home & Crematory.
