Richard D. Barrell, 93, of Republic, passed away Thursday, January 27, 2022, at the Volunteers of America Autumnwood Care Center in Tiffin.
He was born on May 14, 1928, in Tiffin, to Glenn B. and Bertha M. (Fruth) Barrell. He married E. Mardelle Fretz at St. Jacob’s United Church of Christ in Republic, on August 13, 1950 and she preceded him in death on January 19, 2022.
Dick is survived by his children, Cindy (Jim) Voorhees of Republic and Glenwood (Andrea) Barrell of Tiffin, eleven grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, an infant daughter, Debra Barrell, three great-great-grandchildren, two brothers, Robert F. and Glenn J. Barrell and a step-sister, Helen Herman.
Dick was a 1947 graduate of Scipio-Republic High School and a 1984 graduate of Winebrenner Theological Seminary. He was a member St. Jacob’s United Church of Christ, the Gideon’s, the Grange and the Scipio- Republic Historical Society. He sang with the New Gospel Tones and the Gospel Heirs, who often sang in area nursing homes. Mardelle and Dick loved to go camping and to travel. They often delivered clothes in their motorhome to homeless shelters and Indian reservations.
He served as a pastor at the York Street Christian Union, Reedsburg Church of God and the Deweyville Church of God. He also owned and operated the Barrell Tile Works and later Permacast Concrete Products.
There will be a celebration of Richard and Mardelle's life at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 5, 2022 at St. Jacob's United Church of Christ with Pastor Darla Metz officiating. Visitation for friends and family will also be held on Saturday, from 10:00 a.m., until the time of the service at the church. There will be no burial held at this time. The Lindsey-Shook Funeral Home in Bloomville is assisting the family with their arrangements.
