Shirley Egbert lived a long, full and colorful life. She left us on April 22, 2020 as she had lived her life – independently and on her own terms. She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed!
Shirley Blaser Egbert was born on March 31, 1928 in Upper Sandusky, Ohio to Mary and Fred Blaser, and older brother James, during the Depression Era. She was very involved in her local community growing up and attended Heidelberg College in Tiffin. At the end of WWII, she met fellow student, John Egbert, who thought of many creative ways to impress her. Having won her heart, they were married on August 22, 1948, raised three children together and celebrated 53 years of marriage before his death.
Community, friends and family were very important to Shirley and she spent her lifetime helping others and fostering many life-long friendships. As an active parishioner of Trinity United Church of Christ, she served as Director of Religious Education, helped run the ‘Fish Club’ after-school program and proudly sang in the church choir. When she wasn’t supporting her church and family, she made a difference in her community by serving the Weller Commission and volunteering for the United Way.
Shirley enjoyed many wonderful friendships and active pursuits throughout her life. She was an accomplished golfer, skier, snorkeler and bridge player who loved swimming and taking classes at the YMCA. She was a member of Penthouse and enjoyed any reason to socialize, celebrate and play cards. Her infectious smile and hearty laugh warmed many a room over the years.
In retirement, she and her husband John enjoyed traveling to visit their children and grandchildren around the country and explored many other parts of the world. She especially enjoyed visiting Istanbul, Santorini, Mexico and seeing the wonder of Iguasu Falls and energy of Brazil’s Carnival in Rio de Janiero. Later in life, she enjoyed traveling and spending time at Lake Erie with her companion and friend of many years, Bob King.
She is survived by her children Jan Egbert Sullivan (Ean), John Egbert Jr. (Beverly) and Ruth Egbert Miles as well as six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and many friends and relatives who cherish her memory. She was predeceased by her husband John, brother, James Blaser, companion, Bob King and granddaughter, Julie Anne Egbert.
